JoAnn Schulz

JoAnn Schulz, age 95, of Brandon, formerly of Philip, South Dakota, died on Sunday, May 4, 2025 Ava's Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
JoAnn Adele Schulz, age 95, was born September 21, 1929, in Canton, Ohio to Chester Grim and Esther (DeWeese) Grim. She was baptized on December 22nd, 1929, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Canton. When JoAnn was 5 years old, the family moved to Cumberland, MD, where she attended grade school. She was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran in Cumberland on April 18th, 1943, by Pastor Edward Heinz. Her confirmation verse was Luke 11:28, "Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it”. In 1944, the family moved to Pennsauken, NJ. She graduated from Merchantville, New Jersey High School in 1948.
Following her graduation, she worked in the accounting department of Campbell's Soup Company in Camden, NJ, for 5 years. She met her future husband, Kenneth Schulz, who was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ, at a USO dance. They were united in marriage on February 21, 1953, in Temple Lutheran Church in Pennsauken. They moved to Philip, SD where she and Kenneth farmed and ranched. This union was blessed with four children: Susan, Karl, Marie, and Sarah. They were members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip. In August 1971, she became employed at the First National Bank in Philip, where she continued until retiring in 1991. Following her retirement, JoAnn continued working part time at the bank until 1999.
After Kenneth's death on November 27, 2001, she continued to live on the ranch in Philip. She moved to Brandon, SD in 2011, and joined Blessed Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Throughout her life, she acquired many hobbies. She and Kenneth enjoyed polka and square dancing. They belonged to local dance clubs. She was known to sew, knit, crochet, cross-stitch, and quilt, and even made quilts for many of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She studied the genealogy of her family. JoAnn loved to travel, and spent several winters in Alamo, TX, where she met many close friends. She also enjoyed baking, and her community was glad that she would share her talents.
She is survived by her children: Susan (Roger) Hoyme of Tucson, AZ, Karl (Val) Schulz of Philip, SD, Marie (Duane) Rogers of Brandon, SD, and Sarah (Eric) Lewis of Morris, MN; ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth and her parents.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at Rush Funeral Home in Philip.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 8, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip.
Interment will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.
