George Gerbracht

George Gerbracht, age 101, of Bison, SD, passed away on Friday evening, November 24, 2023 at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, ND.

The Rosary for George was held at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. all on Monday, December 4, 2023 at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Bison, SD.  Fr. Bryan Sorensen officiated with burial to follow in the Zeona Cemetery.

Walter George Gerbracht, “George” to his friends and family, was born on May 2, 1922 in Hettinger, ND, to Russell and Elinor (Schultz) Gerbracht.  He was raised on the family ranch and attended school through the 8th grade before he began working.

He eventually started work at the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD.  While there he met Margaret Munoz, who was working at a local café.  They were married and joined their families together, three sons for George and a daughter for          Margaret.   A son Duane was born to them following their marriage.

Following their marriage, George and Margaret moved back to the Gerbracht Ranch where they raised their family, sheep and cattle.  Following 35 years of ranching they purchased a house in Bison where they retired.

George won many awards over the years for his sheep exhibits at the county fairs.   He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Bison.  His health began to fail in 2023 and in July of 2023 he entered the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, ND.  He passed there on Friday, November 24, 2023, with his wife of 67 years, Margaret, by his side.

George is survived by his wife, Margaret, Bison, SD; two sons, Frank (Ty) Gerbracht, Hill City, SD and Walter (Virginia) Gerbracht, Faith, SD; one daughter-in-law, Kathy Gerbracht Cannon Falls, MN; nine grandchildren; numerous great and great-great grandchildren; one sister, Eva Creighton, Rapid City, SD; numerous nieces and nephews and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Cindy Melling; two sons, Duane and Earl Gerbracht; one grandson, Boe Melling; and five brothers and sisters.
