Shirley Lucile Johnson, age 89, of Lemmon, SD, passed away February 28, 2022 at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, ND.

She was born on April 28, 1932 in Lemmon, South Dakota, to Frank and Elizabeth (Hess) Schackow.  Shirley was the first born of three children. She graduated from Lemmon High School in 1950, and in 1954 married John G. Johnson and continued to work with the family ranching.

The family began to grow as Gary, Bob & Mike were born. John, Shirley and the boys settled on the place they would call home until her passing. In 1961, the family struck out on their own and built up their own ranch where they raised cattle and horses.

She was a true ranch wife, as she loved working outside in her garden as well as helping out around the ranch as needed. Her passion though, was hosting neighbors and friends, always having a great meal or goodies and coffee readily available at the drop of a hat. She loved feeding the neighborhood and always made sure that no one went home hungry. She also worked at different businesses in town including Lemmon Livestock, Don’s Electric and Lemmon Equity, and was a very active member of the Rosebud Lutheran Church.

Shirley loved, with her whole heart, her family & the Lord, family always came first. She loved so deeply, and was loved just as much. She had a heart of gold, her smile, laughter and calming touch will be forever missed.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Gary (Jodi) Johnson and Bob (Shilo) Johnson, all of Lemmon, SD, and Mike (Linda) Johnson, Hettinger, ND; eight grandchildren, Colt Schafer, Anna (Luke) Jantzen, Samantha Johnson, Lance (Megan) Johnson, Annie (Andy) Roehl, Cheyann Demoney, Katelyn Eisenbeis and Alexis Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Juno Roehl and Levi Johnson; one brother, Bob (Bonita) Schackow; brother-in-law Earl (Anita) Stugelmeyer; sister-in-law, Martina Ham and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; parents, Frank & Elizabeth; sister, Sharon Stugelmeyer,  sister/brother-in-laws Anna (Lars) Isdal, Andrew (Esther) Johnson, Alice (Jennings) Kettleson, Oscar Johnson, Hilma (John) Randen and Muriel (Ray) Seidel; daughter-in-law, Shelly Johnson; brother-in-law, Donald Ham; grandson, Cory Demoney.
