Rose Elrod

Rose Elrod, age 91, of Murdo, S.D., passed away July 14, 2017, at the Philip Nursing Home. 
 
Rose Marie Richards was born July 12, 1926, on the family farm north of Okaton to John and Maggie (Murer) Richards. She attended the little white country school about two miles from the farm, later attending high school in Midland. Rose was baptized and confirmed in the Murdo Methodist Church. 
 
Rose married Simon Elrod in 1944, living in Midland where they owned and operated several restaurants. The couple moved to Keystone in 1952 where they owned a recreational parlor for a time before moving back to Midland. In 1958, they moved to Murdo where Rose worked at the HHH Truck Stop for 27 years. She also worked at K.F.C., Fern’s Café, Tee Pee Restaurant, Johnson Café, Westside Cafe, and at the Methodist church where she cleaned. 
 
Rose moved to the Prairie View East Apartments in 1984 before retiring in 1991. She continued to do fill-in work for a few years, living independently until moving to the Philip Nursing Home in April of 2016. 
 
Rose enjoyed puzzles, cards, dominoes and crocheting and knitting for her family and friends. She will be deeply missed.
 
Those left to mourn her passing include her children, Barb (Jim) Brecheisen, Las Vegas, Nev., Wally (Carmen) Elrod, Piedmont,  Ella (Randy) Fuhrer, Murdo, Jerry (Julie) Elrod, Pierre, JoAnn (Jerry) Tornow, Newport News, Va., Susan (Greg) Reida, Andover, Kan., and Billy (Patty) Elrod, Williamsburg, Iowa; 27 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Dorothy Stickler, Philip, Violet Vollmer, Albany, Ore., Jack Richards, Jr., Murdo, and Dave (Linda) Richards, Aberdeen; a sister-in-law, Betty Richards, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
 
Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Simon, in 1962; her brothers, Billy and James Richards; an infant son, Lester Robert Elrod; a daughter and son-in-law, Eunice and Doug Koester; and a grandson, John Koester.
 
Services were held Monday, July 17, at the church. A private interment will be held later at the Midland Cemetery.
