Melvin L. Curtis, age 73, of Casper, Wyoming formerly of Milesville, South Dakota, died on Monday, January 6, 2020 in Wyoming after a courageous battle with cancer.
Melvin L. Curtis, 73, of Casper, Wyoming, went to heaven on January 6, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Wall, South Dakota on February 22, 1946, to Harold and Stella Curtis. As a boy he grew up in Milesville, South Dakota.
Melvin married Carole Sorlie in Deadwood, South Dakota in 1964 and, soon after, they started their family while Melvin was working the gold mines in Deadwood. Melvin moved his family to Gillette, Wyoming in 1968 and started his career in the oilfield industry. Oilfield was his life and throughout his career Melvin lived and worked in several states.
Melvin and Carole divorced in 1996. In 2003 Melvin married Donna Weigel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Melvin and Donna retired in 2013. They spent their summers in Wyoming and their winters in Arizona until his health deteriorated in the fall of 2019.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Donna; his three daughters, Lori (Brian) Mensing, Gillette, Jolene (Rich) Hallcroft, Sheridan, and Angie (Kevin) Taylor, Gillette; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Karlene (Richard) Chruszch, Belfield, North Dakota, and Kim (John) Hudson, Pierre, South Dakota; five step-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren; sisters, Deloris (Floyd) Luken, Mineola, Texas, Esther (Harry) Leeper Gillette, JoAnn (Butch) Sanders, Spearfish, South Dakota, Patty (Gary) Senier, Story, Wyoming; brother, Richard (Marcia) Curtis, Rawlins, Wyoming; several nieces and nephews; and Donna’s parents, Vernon and Clara Weigel, Minot, North Dakota.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Stella Curtis; brother, Harold Curtis, Jr.; grandparents, Edgar and Blanche Curtis; and great-granddaughter, Morgan Holland.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip, South Dakota with Pastor Kathy Chesney officiating.
