Lowell King

On November 5, 2023, Lowell King, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 88. There will be a visitation beginning at 6 pm, Tuesday, November 14, at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre, SD, with a prayer service to follow at 7pm. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 am Wednesday, November 15 to be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre, SD.
Lowell was born May 31, 1935 to Forest and Francis (Lomica) King in Philip, SD. He grew up with seven siblings before leaving home and school after graduating 8th grade in May 1949. He worked odd jobs then went to work on the farm of Joy and Cliff Phillips of Midland, SD before enlisting in the Air Force in March 1953. Always one to work hard, Lowell made sure to earn his GED while in the Air Force, which he did in January 1956.
While in the Air Force, Lowell was able to travel the world and visit places he may not have otherwise, returning to the United States in 1958. He settled for a time in Milwaukee, WI where he worked at Nordberg Manufacturing Co. Shortly thereafter he met the love of his life, Thelma Olson, at an ice cream shop in Tichigan, WI. After a whirlwind courtship, Lowell didn’t waste any time asking Thelma to be his wife, and they were married on July 18, 1959. Lowell was honorably discharged from the US Air Force in February 1961, after which the happy couple moved to Blunt, SD, where Lowell’s family had relocated. They were blessed to welcome three children during their marriage: Trudie, Matt and Nancy.
After returning to Blunt, Lowell worked for Korkow Trucking and the State of SD, before going to work at the Oahe Dam for the rest of his career, ending up in the position of Senior Operating Supervisor. After retirement you could find Lowell in his garden or in his woodworking shop. Lowell also enjoyed giving back to his community through being the president of the Senior Center, coaching legion baseball and being on City Council. His kids also “enjoyed” giving back to the community with him, taking time in the evenings and weekends to clean up the city park and other parts of Blunt with him, making sure it was a place they could all be proud to live in. When Lowell wasn’t busy in his shop working, giving back, and raising his children, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. You could also find Lowell watching baseball or football at any given time. On TV or live he enjoyed sports, from children to grandchildren, he followed them all.
For the past 5 years, Lowell resided at Edgewood Senior Living in Pierre, SD. He formed many friendships there, among both the residents and staff. This was reflected in the amazing quality of care he received right up until he passed away.
Lowell was survived by his children Trudie Feldman (Blunt, SD), Matt (Beth) King (Pierre, SD), and Nancy (Bob) Knutson (Wasilla, AK), grandchildren Angie, Shiloe, Nick, Whitney, Joe, Garrett, Ellen, Jens, and Sassa, great-grandchildren Kylee, Dylan, Finnick, Arden and Jasmine, brother Garry (Kay) King, and sister-in-law Patty Olson.
Lowell was preceded in death by his loving wife Thelma, parents, parents-in-law, son-in-law Tom Feldman, brothers and sisters Dorrie (David) O’Connor, Bud (Dona) King, Bob (Dixie) King, Chuck (Helen) King, Mary Ellen (Gary) Wipf and Marilyn Miller.
