James “Jim” Thingvold

James Thingvold, age 88, of Lemmon, SD, passed away on Thursday evening, January 6, 2022 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.

Memorial services for James are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at the Prince of Peace Chapel of the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon, SD.  Rev. James Schmeling will officiate.

James Marlen Thingvold was born on January 7, 1933 at his Grandma Sveum's home in Rugby, ND, to Edwin and Olga (Sveum) Thingvold.  James was the 7th of 14 children.  He grew up on the family farm in Rolette County.  He attended school in the South Valley Country School and later the school in Rolette, ND.

James was united in marriage to Martha Kraft in Willow City, ND, on February 24, 1954.  James and Martha had three children: Arleen (Jerry) Kling, Arlis (Bob) Seim and Arlan (Deborah) Thingvold.  During their lives together, James and Martha lived and worked in several communities in North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana.

In Dickinson, ND, they leased and operated a feedlot and dairy operation.  At 61 years of age James took on managing a Grazing Association located in the Little Missouri breaks near Baker, MT, until his retirement due to health.

James and Martha returned to Lemmon, SD, to be near grandchildren.  Other than family, the one constant in James' life was horses.  From an early age on the family farm, James took a liking to the horses.  His brothers said "when the horses left the farm, James left."  From producing rodeo's in the early 60's to buying, selling and trading horses was his passion, as was working with and breaking them to ride and harness.

To James a family trip only meant going to a horse sale or a rodeo.  Over the years he bought, sold and broke hundreds of horses.

James is survived by his wife, Martha Thingvold, Lemmon, SD; daughters, Arleen (Jerry) Kling, Morristown, SD, and Arlis (Bob) Seim, Bison,SD; son, Arlan (Deborah) Thingvold, Billings, MT; 12 grandchildren, James (J.W.) and Bobbi Seim, Cody and Lesley Kling, Mandi and Devron Leingang, Levi and Regan Kling, Megan and Jason Hulm, Robin and Chris Hulm, Tyler and Alexis Kling, Todd and Alise Kling, Chance and Jordan Seim, Calder Thingvold, Ambre and Brady Zachmann and Tuff Seim; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Delores Johnson, Mary Juergens, Carol Torgerson and Norma Klebe; brothers, Alton Thingvold, Gordon Thingvold and Dennis Thingvold; and numerous nieces and nephews.
