Jack D. Vetter

Jack D. Vetter, age 74, of Bison, SD, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024 at the Monument Health in Rapid City, SD.

Memorial services for Jack will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bison, SD, with Lynn Hall presiding.   Burial will follow in the Bison Cemetery.

Jack was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and friend. He lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his community, and his church. 

Jack Vetter was born on September 20th, 1949 to Alice (Carlson) and Steve Vetter. He grew up in Bison, South Dakota with his sisters Evelyn and Nancy and graduated from Bison High School in 1968. While in high school, Jack met Debby Martin, who he married in 1969. He attended college at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota where he majored in chemistry and minored in mathematics. Jack and Debby had their son, William, while living in Aberdeen. Jack went on to share his knowledge and passion for learning. His first job was in Highmore, South Dakota, where he taught math and science for just over three years. Jack, Debby, and Bill moved to Ellsworth, Minnesota for 2 years before returning to Bison where “Mr. Vetter” taught countless high school students for over 30 years, retiring in 2009. Outside of teaching, Jack farmed and raised cattle until age 70. In his free time, Jack enjoyed playing Texas Hold ‘Em poker online, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was very active at Bison Presbyterian Church where he served many terms as Elder and was on the worship committee. 

Jack Vetter is survived by his wife of 55 years Debby (Martin) Vetter, their son Bill (Carole) Vetter, sister Evelyn (Pat) John, sister Nancy (Ron) Seidel, and grandchildren Reagan Vetter, Riley Vetter, and Ryann Vetter.

Jack Vetter will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the Bison community. 

His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
