Grace Carney

Mrs. Grace Peters Carney of Millsboro, Del. and formerly of Lexington Park, Md., and Albuquerque, N.M., passed away in the care of her daughter and son-in-law Gwynn and Joe Wilhelm and the wonderful staff of Compassionate Care Hospice.
Grace was born in Okaton, S.D. on January 17, 1925, to homesteaders Fred H. and Ethel Dobbins Peters. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Harry “Buzz” Carney in 1996, a son, Steve Carney in 2009,  as well as seven siblings: Wilma Uhlir, Clyde Peters, Betty Borders, Olin Peters, Dale Peters, Alvin “Butch” Peters, and Baby Fred Peters.
She married Buzz, a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps, in 1945, and followed him wherever he would be stationed. During her working years she was employed by Safeway and also was a sales consultant for Home Interiors which fueled her passion and knack for home decorating. She called herself a homebody and loved to cook, decorate, and “cozy in” with her family and friends delighting them with stories of her life growing up on a farm in South Dakota in the 1920s and 30s. Grace will be remembered for the love and kindness she radiated as a mother, grandmother, sister, and to all those she met.
Grace is survived by two daughters Gwynn Wilhelm and her husband Joe, of Millsboro, Del., and Kim Jackson and Con of Albuquerque, N.M., one sister Ethel “Blouie” Oldenkamp of Rapid City, S.D., and two brothers Fredy Peters of Kadoka, S.D., and Allen “Chip” Peters of Murdo, S.D. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren as well as extended family and friends.
Interment will be held at 2:00 pm on October 11 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, 501 Guadalupe St., Santa Fe, N.M. 87501.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in Grace’s memory to Compassionate Care Hospice/ Amedisys (Checks need to be made payable to Amedisys Foundation, 416 William St. Suite 101, Milford, Del. 19963 or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 401 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.
