Frances Marie Bates Volmer, 95, passed away on June 24, 2015, at the Belle Fourche Healthcare Facility.
Frances was born Jan. 28, 1920, in Sturgis, S.D., to Ernest and Johanna Bates.
Frances and her family homesteaded in Cedar Canyon, west of Faith. It was here that Frances acquired her love of horses and ranching. She worked hard alongside her beloved father, mother and three siblings, Alfred, Josie and Gerald Bates. Frances was a keen horsewoman, breaking horses for her father and working with hired hands running sheep and cattle.
Frances and her family moved to New Underwood in the early 1940s to pursue other ranching opportunities. It was in New Underwood that she met the love of her life, Elmer Herman Volmer, at a local dance.
Frances and Elmer eloped and were married Sept. 29, 1947, in Miles City, Mont. Frances and Elmer settled in New Underwood, to pursue their own ranching dreams. To them an only son was born, Neil Allen Volmer, born Nov. 11, 1951.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Johanna; her siblings, Alfred and Josie Bates; and her beloved spouse, Elmer.
Frances is survived by her brother, Gerald (Bonnie) Bates, Rapid City; her son, Neil Volmer, New Underwood; two grandsons, Mario (Nancy) Volmer, Rapid City, and Tyson (Katherine) Volmer, Cody, Wyo., and four great-grandchildren, Ian Smith, Des Moines, Iowa, Chelsea Smith, Rapid City, Nova Volmer, Rapid City, and Taylan Volmer, Cody, Wyo.
A memorial has been established to the New Underwood Cemetery.
Memorial services will be Thursday, July 2, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Kirk Funeral Home with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Mt. View Cemetery in Rapid City.
