Douglas L. Miller

    Douglas L. Miller, age 74, passed from this life on the evening of September 16, 2016, at the Mission Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Mission, Texas. He was a nine-year cancer survivor.
     Mr. Miller was born in Bell Gardens, Calif., on June 26, 1942, the first child of Albert H. Jr. and Bonnie Lingscheit Miller. The family moved to Draper following Albert’s return from Germany in World War II.  Mr. Miller grew up on the family farm north of Draper.  
    After graduating from Draper High School in 1960, he was enrolled at the University of South Dakota where he began his study of Mandarin. He was awarded a Ford Language scholarship and spent the summer of 1963 in Michigan in intensive study of Chinese, which led to his winning an East-West Center scholarship to the University of Hawaii. He was selected to Omicron Delta Kappa honors society while at USD, graduating with a B.A. degree in 1964. Upon his return from Hong Kong and Hawaii with a master’s degree in foreign studies, he married Beverly J. Johnson of Belle Fourche, S.D., on September 17, 1966. The couple resided in Aberdeen, S.D., for the next two years where Mr. Miller taught government and economics at then Northern State College. Mr. Miller was selected for a graduate fellowship at the University of Colorado and was there for two years of course work and teaching in Boulder and Denver campuses. The couple returned to Aberdeen and Mr. Miller became chairman of the social science department. Following the completion of his doctoral dissertation, he joined the staff of Senator Larry Pressler in Washington, D.C. After the election of 1997, he became counsel to the chairman of the Federal Housing Finance Board. He retired after serving over 22 years in federal service and the couple moved to Mission, Texas, in 2003.
    Mr. Miller’s parents and sister, Diana Miller Glantz, Rochester, Minn., preceded him in death.
    He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Beverly J. Miller, Mission, Texas; sons Stuart A. Miller, Constable, N.Y., and Alexander G. Miller, Loudon County, Va.; and grandson James D. Miller, Constable, N.Y.  He is also survived by brother Kenneth Miller, Draper; sisters Penny Dowling, Draper; Rebecca Myers, Urbandale, Iowa; Linda McGee, Byron, Minn.; and Melanie Stampe, Pierre, S.D.; brother-in-law William Glantz, Rochester, Minn.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Interment services will be held in Draper at a later date.
