Daniel Joseph Ulrich passed away at his home in rural Faith, SD in the early morning of August 27, 2021. Family was by his side every day for the last few months as he traveled this road to his final destination.

Daniel was born July 13, 1923 to George and Laura (Bakewell) Ulrich in rural Ziebach County.  He was born at the ranch home one mile from his current home. Daniel attended Ridgeview School, about 1 mile from his birthplace and graduated from Faith High School in 1941. This year would have been 80 years as an alumni and he attended the Faith Homecoming festivities for many years. Dan lived and ranched in rural Faith all of his life except for the time he served in the Army in 1946-47. He was a WWII veteran and very proud to have served his country. He was deployed to Japan and was a heavy equipment operator and when the Army discovered he could type they transferred him to company clerk.

Dan married Doris (Woodard) on August 1, 1956 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Faith. They just celebrated 65 loving and happy years together. Dan and Doris were blessed with three children:  Colleen, Leonard and Robert.

Dan loved his family, neighbors who were also his close friends, and the ranching way of life. He was always interested in the cattle, the haying, and ‘what the “boys” did that day.’  Dan kept a diary every year from 1962 until recently. Many friends would call and ask when someone died or when something happened in the Faith Community.   He could usually look back in a diary and come up with the answer.

Daniel was a civic promoter for many years and many organizations. He was a lifetime member of the V. F. W., was baptized, confirmed, married, and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He also served on the Red Elm School Board and Ziebach County Election Board for several years. Dan was a member of the Faith Stock Show and Rodeo since the late ‘50s, and was the President from 1967-1968. Dan was a charter member and promoter of the rural telephone system (party lines) in the area homes around the neighborhood. He enjoyed being part of and serving the Faith community.

Daniel is survived by his beloved wife, Doris, his children Colleen Gustafson, Leonard (Louise), Robert (Amy), 9 grandchildren--Eric (Amber) Gustafson, Alex (Candace) Gustafson, Abigail (Lee) Smart, Laura Ulrich (Kerry) Holmes, Joseph, Jacob, James, Ann, and April Ulrich and 11 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both parents, all his siblings--Eugene, Rita, Dorothy, and Grace (Chamness), precious grand-daughter Hillary Joy Gustafson, brother/sister in-laws-Earl Chamness, Johnny and Betty Hostetter, Orville and Jane Hauser, Bob and Nita Rogers, and Virgil Woodard.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Faith Area Memorial Chapel of the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home.
