Arlene Freda Martin

Arlene Martin, age 91, of Dupree, SD, passed away at her home on Monday, November 11, 2024 in Dupree, SD.

Celebration of Arlene's Life was held Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at the Pioneer Hall in Dupree, SD.  Pastor Sam Owens officiated followed by a time of fellowship and lunch, burial was held at Opal Cemetery, Opal, SD.   Arlene Freda Martin was  born on April 4, 1933 in Edson, South Dakota to Allen A and Emma (Kenstler) Cooper. She was fourth of five children. 

She married Arthur R. Martin in Pierre, South Dakota on August 5, 1952. 

To this union they had David in September of 1953 and Diane in May of 1957. 

Arlene held the office of Mayor and council person for 29 years for the town of Dupree. She enjoyed every meeting. 

Arlene had a mail route from Dupree to Cherry Creek, with patrons along the way, for 50 years. This was her joyful time. She was an honorary member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Her name was “People Wait for Woman.”

She passed away peacefully in her home on November 11, 2024.

She cared deeply for her family and town. 

She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Bruce) Humble of Faith, SD; daughter-in-law, Rhonda (Wes Escott) Martin of Faith, SD; grandchildren, Blaine Humble of Faith, SD, Jeremiah Martin of Mason, NC, Melitta (Ron) Bonnet of Whitewood, SD, and Alyssa (Wade) Kopren of Bison, SD; great grandson, Landon Schultes of Faith, SD; honorary granddaughters, Kaitlyn Dupris, Bailee Birkeland, and Liberty Schultes; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; many relatives, friends, and neighbors; and special person, Dwight Gubberd. 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; son, David; and parents, Allen A and Emma Cooper; brothers, John, Ted, and Art; sister, Dorothy; and numerous brothers and sisters in law. 

A memorial has been established to the Dupree Fire Department.
