Adolph Herman Beer

Adolph Herman Beer was born on December 13th, 1930 to Mary (Boeding) and Fred Beer. His early years were spent at the home place where he survived his first nights in the warmth of the family’s kitchen stove. He completed country school through the 8th grade after which he stayed home to help on his family’s farm and care for his brother, LeRoy, when polio struck. He continued to assist with his brother’s care for decades which provided great joy and lead into a life of service, kindness and compassion.
Adolph volunteered to join the US Army in September of 1955 and he served until he was honorably discharged in June of 1957. Upon returning to South Dakota, he took a job with the state highway department and continued to farm and ranch.
Adolph married Margaret (Marge) Alley on June 29th, 1963. Adolph ranched and Marge taught school while raising their five children together, leading their family in faith and love. The family resided 10 miles west of Isabel where he remained until his death at the age of 89.
Adolph’s life was dedicated to his family and their ranch, where he worked alongside 4 generations, working cattle and carrying on the ranching tradition. He enjoyed trading help with neighbors and helping out where he could. He was rarely seen without a smile. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, praying the rosary with Marge and his children every evening and playing many a card games with friends and family. Many laughs were shared with family during games of pinochle and talks around the kitchen table. Adolph enjoyed attending his children’s sporting events and activities, even volunteering to drive the school bus. Adolph loved visiting with friends at the Isabel Celebration every year. Adolph continued to live on the ranch and help with day to day activities alongside two of his sons and their families. When his son and daughters from out of state could visit, there was always a tearful goodbye and a wave out the window. His hugs and hand squeezes will greatly be missed.
Adolph was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, The American Legion, Glad Valley Fire Department and served as a school board member at the country school.
He lived by the verse, “Your care for others is the measure of your greatness,” Luke 9:48. He will be remembered fondly for his love of family, kindness, faith, generous heart and infectious smile.
Adolph passed away peacefully on Palm Sunday, April 5th, 2020, at Mobridge Regional Hospital.
