HOWELL, Mich. - Lyle Melvin, 87, passed away November 20, 2007, at his home in Howell, MI.

He was born July 29, 1920, in Wall, SD, to Patrick and Cecilia Melvin. He grew up on the family farm north of Wall.

He enlisted in the Marines during WWII and after receiving a medical discharge, went to Long Beach, CA, to join his fiancée and work in the shipyards. He was married to Gwenda Sieh on November 28, 1942, in Long Beach, CA. They were planning a celebration of their 65th wedding anniversary at the time of his death.

Gloria E. Montgomery, age 78, of Kadoka, formerly of Quinn, SD, died Sunday November 25, 2007, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Gloria Monaco was born January 31, 1929, at Anaconda, MT, the daughter of Angelo and Maria (Farrace) Monaco. She grew up in Anaconda where she graduated form high school in 1946. She then graduated from college at Havre, MT. She taught elementary school for several years.

Gloria was united in marriage to Thomas Montgomery on June 10, 1950, in Coeur D'Alene, ID. They made their home in Butte and Helena, MT, in Chile, in New Mexico and in Globe, AZ.

Don Bergeson, 79, of Pierre, died Friday, November 23, 2007, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Services will be held Thursday, November 29, at Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre at 10:00 a.m. CT, with burial in Riverside Cemetery.

Donald was born on January 7, 1928, southwest of Hayes to Arthur and Mary (Olesen) Bergeson. He grew up in Hayes where he attended grade school. He then went to T.F. Riggs High School in Pierre where he graduated in 1947.

He was united in marriage to Gretha Floyd on September 2, 1950, at Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre.

It may have taken a little longer than anticipated but Missouri River water will soon be flowing through area water lines.

Late last week, West River/ Lyman-Jones Rural Water System employees were taking the final steps that will hook-up a pipeline that will supply Philip with water from the Missouri River. As of Wednesday, November 21, 2007, they were laying pipeline within feet of the tank.

By early 2008, the river water will begin flowing into the Philip reservoir north of town.

With a 30-3 season record, the Philip Lady Scotties began the State Class "B" State High School Volleyball Tournament as the number three seeded team. The tournament was November 15th through the 17th in Sioux Falls.

The Scotties had not lost a Class B match during the regular season. Two of their three losses went to Hot Springs and the other went to Bennett County, both Class A teams. The Scotties had won the District 13B tournament, then defeated Wall for the Region 7B championship.

Elsie Rae Mortensen, age 77, of Wall, died Thursday, November 22, 2007, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Services were held Monday, November 26, at First Lutheran Church, with Pastor Monty Dell officiating.

Music was provided by Rhonda Mettler, organist, and Tom Ramirez, vocalist. Ushers were Darwin Haerer, Dan Dartt, Roger Fortune and Dennis Sieler.

Reid C. Palecek, stillborn son of Nicholas and Dusti (Feddersen) Palecek, died Saturday, November 17, 2007, at the Sanford Mid-Dakota Hospital in Chamberlain.

Survivors include his parents, Nicholas and Dusti Palecek of Ft. Pierre; a brother, Daylen Palecek of Ft.

Elizabeth L. Brown, age 82 of Tyndall, SD, died November 14, 2007, at the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center.

Services were held Friday, November 16, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Philip.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.

Elizabeth Lucy Maris Brown was born February 17, 1925, in Parade, SD, the daughter of James and Agnes (Paradis) Brown. She grew up in Parade, and later in the Chamberlain, SD, area. She finished her schooling in Kansas. She received her nursing training in Los Angeles, California during WWII.

Beryl "Bud" Allen was born November 15, 1918, in a house his father built in Ansley, Nebraska, the son of Peter G. and Agnes (Duncanson) Allen. As a child the family lived on a farm in the Ansley area and a ranch in the Burwell, Nebraska area. In 1926, the family moved to a farm east of Longvalley in Washabaugh County. He completed his education in that community. As a young man he worked for his parents and Maurice and Mae Handcock for several years. In 1940, he and Carson Dithmer moved to California to work on the railroad.

The Haakon District 27-1 Board of Education meeting on Monday, November 19, 2007, began with communications from the audience.

Philip second grade instructor, Jessica Wheeler, is the head of the Haakon Education Association's playground equipment project. She reported that a fundraising auction of special items will be held on January 20th, 2008. Wheeler said that her students are "excited about the progress" and about the different items coming in the mail. Items are coming in almost every day.

All auctioned items will be donations from famous individuals or businesses.
